Tuesday Ten: Books (Part One)

I asked on my Instagram stories what you would like to see this week for Tuesday Ten and I was so happy to see that the overwhelming answer was books. I started to compile the list of books I wanted to share and the list was quickly over ten items. So I will be sharing books in a Two Part Tuesday Ten. I love books and can’t wait to talk about them. So here are nine books I’ve read and recommend and one on my to be read list!
Still Alice by Lisa Genova. This book is about a mother, wife, and professor with very early onset Alzheimer’s Disease. It is interesting and heartbreaking and made me think long after I finished the book. The move adaption was actually pretty good as well.
The Longest Ride by Nicholas Sparks. This is probably my favorite Nicholas Sparks books and I’ve read a lot of them. This book flashed between two love stories; one of yesteryear and one of current day. They eventually intertwined in the most beautiful way. I would definitely re-read this book. The movie adaption is also fantastic. Scott Eastwood is hotttt.
Inside the O’Briens by Lisa Genova. Another one by Lisa Genova. I like that she chooses a medical disease or impairment and writes about it, but it isn’t all the book is about. She focuses on the family and relationships. This book is about a father, husband, and police officer with Huntington’s Disease.
One Year Off: Leaving it All Behind for a Round the World Journey with our Children by David Elliot Cohen. This book will give you major wanderlust. It’s a little hard to relate 100% to because this family spent A LOT of money during their year off. But it was cool hear about a family breaking free from the norm and spending a year traveling, learning, and just being together.
Some Assembly Required: The Not So Secret Life of a Transgender Teen by Arin Andrews. When I read this book I was astonished by the bravery of this young person. He wasn’t that much younger than me when I read the book, and I don’t think I would have had the courage to come out and start transitioning when he did. Then on top of that he shared his story in book form. I’m sure that Arin Andrews is an inspiration to a lot of young members of the LGBTQ community.
Walden on Wheels: On the Open Road from Debt to Freedom by Ken Ilgunas. This is a story of a man doing what he has to do to live his dreams. School was too expensive for him, so he ended up living in his sort of decked out van. I follow so many #vanlife and #vagabond hashtags on instagram; this book was a different perspective, it showed the not so glamorous side. I would highly recommend if you are at all interested in alternative living.
The Pioneer Woman: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels, a Love Story by Ree Drummond. I love a good love story. This book is that. This book is about how the “Pioneer Woman” Ree Drummond met and fell in love with her husband who she calls the Marlboro Man. It’s a quick, easy read that fills your heart with love.
In the Country We Love: My Family Divided by Diane Guerrero. I read this memoir in one night. I could not put it down. I felt for the family in the book. I was and am so thankful that I have never personally dealt with the tradegies experienced in this book, but it also breaks my heart that people go through these things daily. This book is inspiring.
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. This memoir is tear-jerking and gut-wrenching but it also shows you the resilience of children. I have always wanted to foster children, but after reading this book it made me want to even more. Although the children in the book were never in a foster care situation, I know that there are kids out there suffering in similar situations and I just want to help them. The movie adaption was not super great.
To-Be Read:
10. Dear Girls: Intimate Tales, Untold Secrets, and Advice for Living Your Best Life by Ali Wong. This book is on my to-be read list and I currently have it checked out from the library. I love Ali Wong; I randomly stumbled across her stand up on Netflix and I have watched her tons since then. She was great in You’ll Always Be My Maybe too. I think her memoir will be hilarious and full of great tidbits.
Let me know what you're reading and what you want to read. Come back next week for Books (Part Two)!
xoxo, Kari
