This Week (February 25 - March 3, 2019)
This Week I…
Watched- What Men Want with Taraji P Henson in the movie theater. I loved What Women Want with Mel Gibson back in the day. I watched it all the time on TV when I definitely was not supposed to be watching it. I really liked this modern remake. It was very funny and I am constantly impressed with how versatile some actors can be. The last big film that I can remember seeing Taraji in was Hidden Figures. (I know she has been in a lot more, but this is the last one that really stood out to me.) These two films, What Men Want and Hidden Figures, are very different. One is a historical memoir in film and the other is a tale about a woman with drug induced powers. However, both of these films are champions of women’s rights. The real life women portrayed in Hidden Figures were smart as can be and so ahead of their time. The woman in What Men Want works earn the respect of her sexist and possibly racist boss. She is told to “stay in her lane”, multiple times. Taraji herself is known as a feminist and has proclaimed herself as one multiple times. It makes sense that she would challenge herself in taking on these very different roles, but at the same time stay true to herself by staying true to her feminist beliefs.
what men want what women want
Read- Hidden Figures! I am actually listening to it on audio, but it still counts. I love Hidden Figures (the movie) and this book dives even further into the lives of these extraordinary women. I’m excited to continue listening to the audiobook.
Listened to- the A Drink with James Podcast: A Conversation with Julia Engel and Thomas Berolzheimer. Julia is the creator of the Gal Meets Glam, an instagram and blog. Together Julia and Thomas (Julia's husband and garden enthusiast) created the Gal Meets Glam dress line. I love the aesthetic of both Julia’s instagram and the dress line. On the podcast James asked the two of them how they got their start. It was fascinating to hear how they became so successful. It is inspiration for me because I am hopefully on a similar trajectory. While listening to the podcast I posted about it on my instagram. Julia and Thomas shared this on both of their instagrams. From that I messaged Julia back about some further questions I had after listening to the podcast. She has over a million followers and still messaged me back and answered all of my questions, in detail. I so appreciated that. That is the kind of influencer I want to be.

Celebrated- Mom’s Day Out! I’m not a mom, but one of my besties is. She is so deserving of a day off, so we planned a day of fun!
Visited- Chicago! Morgan (the bestie above) and I took a day trip to the city, more to come in a later blog post!
Ate- Burgers and mini corn dogs. We made super healthy choices on Mom’s Day Out.
Wore- bright colors and big pattern. As a plus size woman, we are often told what we should not wear. Naysayers say we should not wear loud prints or colors because it is just not flattering to our shapes. I say screw that. I will wear whatever I want, whenever I want. I am not 100% comfortable with my body 100% of the time, but it’s the only body I’ve got and this is the only life I’ve got. I don’t have time to waste thinking about what others think I should do. I am living my life for me and dressing for when I catch my reflection in the mirror.
