Tuesday Ten: Books (Part Two)

Last week, I asked on my Instagram stories what you would like to see for Tuesday Ten and I was so happy to see that the overwhelming answer was books. I started to compile the list of books I wanted to share and the list was quickly over ten items. So this week is Books: Part Two. I love books and can’t wait to talk about them. So here are nine books I’ve read and recommend and one on my to be read list!
Unbelievable: My Front Row Seat to the Craziest Campaign in American History by Katy Tur. This book truly lives up to the name, the book is unbelievable but 100% true. This memoir follows Katy Tur’s journey as a journalist for NBC as she follows 2016 presidential candidate, Donald Trump.
Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah. First off, listen to this book on audiobook. Trevor Noah himself reads it and his voice is amazing. (Also, there are a lot of words that I wouldn’t have known how to say.) The story follows his life growing up in South Africa and it is wild. It’s so completely different than how I grew up. It’s interesting to hear about.
Sad Desk Salad by Jessica Grose. This book is a quick, easy, fun read. It is about a blogger who finds out some celebrity dirt and the blogger has to decide whether to release this information and possibly ruin the celebrity’s life, or get fired for not publishing the information. I think I read this book in a day or two. I would recommend it if you want a quick, different read.
When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon. This is a Young Adult novel, found in the Teen Zone at my library. I think it is classified as this because the characters are in college age, but the audience for the book could be anyone. The characters in the book are supposed to have an arranged marriage. I LOVED this book. I hope it becomes a movie or tv show, I think it would be a good one.
How to American: An Immigrant’s Guide to Disappointing Your Parents by Jimmy O Yang. I listened to this audiobook when I was driving back and forth while my mom was in the hospital. This memoir was exactly what I needed at that time. It’s hilarious!
From the Corner of the Oval by Beck Dorey-Stein. I absolutely loved this memoir. I messaged the author on Instagram to tell her how much I loved it, and she even messaged back. This book follows a White House stenographer. She worked for President Obama and briefly for President Trump. It was so fascinating to hear about this job, because it’s one that I didn’t even know existed, and one that she found on Craigslist!
Life Will be the Death of Me (and you too!) by Chelsea Handler. I have been a fan of Chelsea Handler off and on. Sometimes I think she’s too much but this book was exactly right. I listened to this audiobook, and I’m so glad I did, even though it made me cry in the car. In this memoir, Chelsea talks a lot about therapy and the loss of her brother, her best friend. This book made me want to go back to therapy, and reinforced the idea that EVERYONE needs therapy.
Know My Name by Chanel Miller. This book was hard to read. Chanel Miller is Emily Doe, the woman who’s victim impact statement was posted on Buzzfeed. I remember reading that statement; I was laying in my bed and I read it and cried. Chanel has been so brave throughout the whole situation, even through her tears, and she is so brave now publishing the memoir of her attempted rape, the trial, and the aftermath. I would recommend this book to anyone, I think it’s important, BUT you have to be in a good place to read it. You cannot read it if you are still reeling from something, especially if it is something similar. If you are in pain, have been a victim of sexual assault or rape, please call: 1-800-656-4673.
Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. This book is so good. I love cheesy romance novels and this is that but with a twist. It’s current and relevant and amusing. It’s written in a typical book form, but there are also text chains, emails, and tabloid headlines. I want to read more about the couple in the book and more from the author.
And one I want to read:
10. Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. I have heard a lot of good reviews of this book, which makes sense because it was on the New York Times Best Seller List for 27 weeks. The book tells two stories which ultimately intertwine. This seems to me like it would be similar to a Nicholas Sparks book. I currently have this checked out from the library and I am excited to start this book.
What are you reading? What is on your To-Be-Read List?
Let me know!
XOXO, Kari
