The Met Gala is an exclusive fundraising event that happens once a year, every year since 1938. It takes places on the first Monday in May. The invite only event raises money for the Met's Costume Institute and celebrates the opening of a new exhibition. Since there is no press allowed in the actual event, the red carpet (or in this year's case, the pink carpet) is where the stars and designers really shine and have a chance to show off their outfits.
Each year has a theme and your outfit is supposed to coordinate with that theme. Past themes have included China, Through the Looking Glass, and Punk: Chaos to Couture. This year the theme was Camp: Notes on Fashion. At first when I heard this theme I was imaging all the Troop Beverly Hills vibes.
But it turned out that the theme was more Campy than Camp. Campy means fun, whimsical, gaudy, kitschy, or tongue-in-cheek. I love this theme. I think sometimes, especially mega designers or editors, can take fashion too seriously. Fashion is meant to be fun and this year's theme showed that.
Trends from The Pink Carpet
Feathers
Feathers were all over the carpet, in all colors. I think this will be a big trend for the fall. I would love a heavy cardigan with a feather detail.
Shoulders
A strong shoulder was seen on many different people. Sometimes the shoulder was on a cape, other times it was on a dress. Nonetheless, it seems that the women wearing the strong shoulder look are reclaiming their space. I love the feminism behind this look, I think it will be a big trend in the winter. I can see oversized coats with a strong shoulder everywhere.
Hair
Wigs, big hair a-la Marie Antoinette, and crowns were seen on the pink carpet this year. This is one of my favorite trends from the carpet because it can so easily be translated into your everyday style. To translate this into your everyday style you could throw on a big headband or tease your hair, Texas style.
Metallics
Gold and silver, white and black, as long as it sparkles, I'm a fan. This is another of my favorite trends from the carpet. It can be translated into everyday style as well, just with a little more effort. I love a metallic skirt with a graphic tee for everyday or a glitzy shirt and jeans for a night out.
Kitschy
These ladies really went for it and stayed on theme 10000%. I love this. Fashion is meant to be fun, and you can tell these ladies had fun. I am obsessed with all of these looks. These can also be easily translated into your everyday style, just not on quite the same scale as they were seen on the carpet. I would definitely wear Kacey Musgraves' Barbie hair dryer bag any day.
Kari's Favorite Looks
Emma Roberts in Giambattista Valli Haute Couture.
I have loved Emma Roberts since she was on Unfabulous. I thought I couldn't love her any more after I found out about her book club, Belletrist. She's a {Scream} Kween. BUT THEN TODAY SHE SHOWED UP IN THIS AND I AM NOT WELL. I want to wear this look everyday of my life for every occasion. I would like to be married in it and die in it.

Serena Williams in Atelier Versace and Nike.
This is kind of what I had envisioned the Camp Red Carpet to look like. I thought she was going for a fire look, she just needed some marshmallows to roast over her. I mean this in the best way possible. I LOVE that she married her couture gown with sneakers. I love mixing the high and the low, the dressy with the casual. Plus, a girl's gotta be comfortable.

Ashley Graham in Gucci.
I love this ponytail look. I want every single one of those clips or bows. I also just love her! She's a gorgggeous plus size model who helps to spread the word on body positivity.

Lena Waithe in Pyer Moss.
Lena knows how to use her incredible platform for good. Last year she wore an incredible Rainbow Cape to support the LGBTQ community. This year her suit jacket read, "Black Drag Queens Invented Camp." This statement is incredibly true, and I am so thankful to them for that.
Honorable Mentions
Lady Gaga in Brandon Maxwell.

Cardi B in Thom Browne

Until next year, xoxo.
